An attractor for agri-business, biotechnology and environmental enterprises, in Guelph you will find the world renowned research and development facilities of the University of Guelph, and a cluster of government and industry support services.
Agri-food represents a $63 billion value chain in Ontario. More than 640,000 people in the province are employed in the industry.
In Guelph-Wellington, nearly 5,000 people are employed in this sector. This includes government, education, biotechnology, agri-food technology, agricultural supply, equipment, food processing, associations, research, marketing and other services.
The heart of biotechnology research in Guelph resides under supervision of the University of Guelph. Supported by the Ontario Agriculture College and the Ontario Veterinary College, U of G provides some of the most significant agriculture research in Ontario. Supporting the strong research base are numerous associated organizations, including the U of G Research Park and non-profit associations such as the Ontario Agri-Food Technologies.
Ontario Agri-Food Technologies is a not-for-profit organization with members from farm associations, academia, industry and governments. OAFT focuses on Ontario's participation in developing, promoting and adopting biotechnology in an ethical and environmentally conscious manner, for the agri-food sector of the province. OAFT proactively supports the continued development and adoption of new Agri-food technologies in a manner which will stimulate improvements in farm and food processing sustainability, profitability, and improve Ontario's strong position in the Agri-food sector, both nationally and internationally.
The Guelph Technology Commercialization Centre (GTCC)- a new state-of-the-art Biotech facility dedicated to start-up companies is planned for the City of Guelph.
