Canada is a world leader in biotechnology. The number of biotechnology companies across Canada has grown to over 500.

Ontario is the hub of much of this activity. Ontario is emerging as a major North American centre for biotechnology R&D, innovation and industrial growth, demonstrating strength in areas such as agri-food biotechnology, therapeutics biotechnology and genomics.

Ontario is home to several world universities, teaching hospitals and institutions. Several biotechnology clusters have developed in this province in Guelph, Kingston, London, Mississauga, Ottawa, and Toronto. To support such clusters, the province has or is building incubators. These community-based commercialization centres will help develop start-up biotechnology companies emerging from universities, hospitals, institutes and from private industry. These incubators are a means of developing partnerships between companies, universities, research centers, hospitals and government.

Ontario's biotech industry:
 • Canada's largest - and North America's 3rd largest - regional concentration of biotechnology firms.
 • Over 140 biotech companies and 21 research institutions. 
 • 2,500 highly educated scientists, engineers and technicians. 

Ontario's pharmaceutical industry:
 • Over 112 manufacturing facilities. 
 • Key operations by global pharmaceutical giants such as GlaxoSmithKline, Amgen, Biogen, Genzyme, AstraZeneca, Eli Lilly and Pfizer. 
 • Data from Ontario clinical trials is recognized by American and European medical authorities.
