Kingston is home to four emerging technology clusters in the areas of Information Technologies and Telecommunications, Health Sciences, Advanced Materials, and Environmental Products and Services.
The Health Sciences cluster reveals a considerable range of world-class, leading edge, technological capabilities. Kingston is a regional health care centre and has four major health service providers, all of which are affiliated with Queen's University. The Health Sciences sector employs approximately 5,500 people and its annual output is valued at more than $490 million.
Kingston has more than a dozen biotechnology companies set up employing approximately 150 people, but there is potential for much more.
The city plans to focus on the development of a research park within the next five years to attract large biotechnology firms, produce synergies between hospital-based and commercial research, and generate new companies.
