Profile Mississauga is strategically located in the centre of Canada's major consumer and industrial market, in the Province of Ontario. It sits on the western edge of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), only 90 minutes from the U.S. border. Specifically, Mississauga is situated at a latitude of 43 36' north and a longitude of 79 39' west, 173 metres (570') above sea level.
The City is served by Canada's largest airport, two national railways and the greatest concentration of major highways in the country, all of which make Mississauga ideally poised to serve local, national and international markets. Many world-renowned corporations have located their head office or plant facilities in Mississauga. With 38 of Canada's Top 500 corporations headquartered here, Mississauga ranks as the fourth largest head office centre in the country. The pharmaceutical industry has also carved a niche in this debt-free region. "Pill Hill," home to about 70 companies in Mississauga, is the largest base of pharmaceuticals in Ontario. Enrolment growth and expansion best describe the University of Toronto at Mississauga (UTM) in this first decade of the new millennium. An integral part of the western GTA since 1967, UTM has produced 26,000 graduates and contributes significantly to Mississauga's and the GTA's well-educated work force. The University of Toronto Master of Biotechnology Program will produce graduates with all of the necessary skills to become successful participants in this important expanding global industry.
